What are keywords and key phrases?
The optimisation of keywords is the basis of almost every critical aspect of search engine optimisation and search engine marketing. Below I have explained what keywords and key phrases are to help you understand why they are so important for your website.
Meta keywords and key phrases are really important in terms of your websites seo success. But what are they? In simple terms keywords and key phrases are the words and phrases typed into the search engine by the user when searching. Also referred to as seo keywords and key phrases; they are individual words and common sense groups of words which must be built both visibly and invisibly into your website. A seo friendly website will have your key words and phrases built into each of your website’s pages of code, structure, content, and inbound links. When this is completed properly it allows search engines to categorise each of your website’s pages, in order that people using the search engine will receive the most relevant results for their search. This is important, as it means that the people looking for you, your products or services, can find your website.
For example if Sam wants to find a Photographer in Manchester, he opens his internet browser, brings up the search engine and types into the search box:
“Photographer in Manchester”, or maybe “Photographer Manchester”, or perhaps “Manchester Photographer”
If you wanted your Manchester based photography business to be found by Sam, you would design your business search engine optimisation keywords to include these words/phrases as these are what a potential customer is likely to type into the search engine when looking for the service that you are providing. You would use these terms in various sections of the pages of your website which would in turn bring the customer to your website.

You will need to brainstorm key phrases which contain ideally 2-4 words which are highly relevant and accurately describe what you are offering. These key phrases are usually best put in layman’s terms, or the types of everyday words that you would imagine the average person will use when searching for the goods or services you are offering. If you choose single words or phrases which are to short, you will probably find that these are considered too general. On the other hand if you choose key phrases which are too long, this will be considered too specific and you will find that not many users will type a key phrase of perhaps 8 words or more into the search engine.
