Article 6 - How do I increase traffic to my website?

The internet is bigger than Google!

Nowadays it seems that when people think of the web, they think of Google as the elite, with an ultimate goal to be listed on their first page no matter what. Yes we all want to be at the top of Google, but in such a competitive market place there is only room for 10 websites, so not everybody can be there. Why do we all want to be on the first page of Google?

Being on the first page of Google will drive a huge amount of traffic to your website, but as a new business you will not achieve first page ranking overnight.

I do believe that those people who are focused on their products/services, branding, website, seo, sem (search engine marketing), and growth of their company via the internet, can achieve first page listings of Google (after considerable time and effort), but in the mean time there are other ways to increase the amount of traffic to your website.

‘Yes Google is BIG, but the web is VERY VERY BIG.’

Whilst you are fighting your way up the Google ranking mountain, there are other ways to drive traffic to your website which will also improve your ranking in the major search engines at the same time.

How do I increase the number of visitors to my website?

Here are some ways:

Use forums

Show your expertise in your area by posting in forums. People post numerous questions they do not know the answers to. Becoming a trusted source will give your website/products/services more credibility. In short becoming actively involved in your industry sector, will drive more and more traffic to your website.

Make the most of social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace

These are a great way to promote your business for free! You can use websites such as Facebook and MySpace to promote new products/services. Offer special deals, and generally keep customers up to date with recent news. Every time you post something new, you will also post a link to your website. This will increase traffic to your website and also increase the number of returning visitors, attract new potential customers and as a result optimise your website, which will lead to improved search engine ranking.

Write articles

Writing articles is a great way to show off what you know. If you enjoy writing and have a good writing style, people will often re-visit your website to keep up to date. This is great seo, as search engines like returning visitors so this will help boost your search engine ranking. Also when written in an ‘seo friendly way’, articles can improve your ranking just by featuring on your website. Click here for ‘How to write an seo friendly article’

Use tools such as Google ad words

No matter what your budget, you can achieve first page ranking on Google instantly using google adwords.  www.adwords.google.com/

Get your basic seo in place

Make sure the basics of search engine optimisation have been applied to your website:
Domain name: If you are a new business and you are yet to purchase your domain name choose a domain name which is rich in keywords and describes the product or service you are selling.

Title tags

Make sure your title tags are relevant, unique and flow from one to another in a reader friendly way. Avoid fluff words; be specific and rich in information.

Meta description

The meta description is the description of your website under the title tags in the search result. Make sure this description is relevant, and best describes the products/services your website is offering.

Keywords and key phrases

Image Alt tags

These are important as they allow the search engine spiders (robots) to read a brief description for each image in your website.

H1/H2/H3 tags

These are the tags for your main and sub headings. It is very important that these are in place and used correctly. Search engines like the correct formatting of header tags and put a lot of weight on those words and phrases with H tags. Just add < h1 >keyword< /h1 > to the main keyword and the same for your secondary keyword replacing h1 with h2 and deleting the spaces, and again for your tertiary header. If you are not familiar with HTML coding, ask your web designers to do this for you.

Use underline, bold, strong and italics tags on each pages keyword/key phrase. Search Engines give more weight to words that are using these tags. Do not over do it, applying these tags at least two or three times would be enough.
